Wedding, Funeral and Family

I hope everyone has had a great holiday. I have been off the grid for a while, finally have a few hours to catch up on some blogs and catch up on Email.
Tomorrow I fly to Portland to attend my nephews wedding in Vancouver. Then my stubborn grandma decided to kick the bucket so I get to attend a funeral. My most favorite and last grandma couldn't hold on one more week so I could see her alive one more time. She has given me great memories and a great spirit. I think if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have thought being a little different was okay. She was a completely quirky and wild Grandma. She married 7 times, the last marriage lasted over 50 years. She would wear mini skirts, high heels, and see-thru tops to family gatherings. She always had her black and white checkered travel bar that she brought with her everywhere. It was full of hard liquor and glasses, she would come into our house hug and kiss all of us kids, sit down, open her little travel bar, pour herself a stiff drink and start knitting. She was always knitting. She has about 46 grand children and all of us have an afghan that was knitted by her. She was the complete opposites of both my conservative parents so she was always fun to have around. I will miss her.

Okay off to go catch up on all the blobs out there. Happy New Year everyone!!

Every family should have someone as colorful as your grandma to keep things real.

Now that's a grandma. I'm so sorry you didn't get the chance to see her one more time but sounds like the memories are something to treasure forever.

Just hope they are ready for her up there - and God needed an new afghan you know?

I'm sorry she couldn't hang on a weeeee bit longer for one last hug and kiss and laugh, but it sounds like you got the best packed into your memory, so she knew she was okay getting the hell out of here. I'm kind of grateful to her for giving you some choices that no one else was giving you.

"... open her little travel bar, pour herself a stiff drink and start knitting."

That really made me smile. What a great woman she was, hard drinkin' and hard knittin'. And also for giving you the sense that it was OK to be different and important to be who you are.

Happy new year and safe travels! And I hope you get lucky and inherit the travel bar- what a perfect way to remember such a fun spirit :)
